To inhibit the inflammation-inducing enzymes COX-2 and 5-LOX, pharmaceutical extracts of Nextrutine R and 5-Loxin are now part of the Cognitex formula. Water-soluble quercetin has been added to help guard against the formation of abnormal blood clots (thrombosis). According to a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine, “Elderly people with silent brain infarcts have an increased risk of dementia and a steeper decline in cognitive function than those without such lesions.

Phosphatidylserine is included to maintain neuronal membrane integrity and guard against cortisol toxicity. The formula contains alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (GPC) to boost acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter critical for optimal learning and memory functions. Vinpocetine is included to enhance circulation and oxygenation to brain cells, improve neural electrical conductivity and protect against neuron-destroying excitotoxicity. The new Cognitex is available with or without pregnenolone, a hormone that may be especially beneficial to the brain.
