In the body, chromium combines with niacin to facilitate insulin’s role in glucose metabolism. Chromium helps reduce the amount of insulin needed to maintain blood sugar, and this may be the mechanism by which it helps to induce fat loss. Some studies report that people who have type II diabetes can obtain better glucose control by taking chromium supplements.

Mainstream doctors have criticized chromium supplements as being ineffective and potentially dangerous. A review of the scientific literature, however, indicates that the reason many people do not respond to chromium is that the dose they take is too small.

For instance, supplementing with 200-400 mcg per day of chromium has not produced consistent benefits, whereas doses of 600-1000 mcg per day have resulted in body fat reduction*, along with reductions in cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), hemoglobin A1c (the blood marker of glycation), and glucose.* Chromium has also been shown to elevate beneficial HDL.*

While it is acknowledged that higher does of chromium are needed, concern has been raised that too much chromium might induce free radicals and damage DNA. Published scientific studies, on the other hand, show that consuming antioxidants along with even very high amounts of chromium produces no increase in oxidative stress or genomic damage.

For many years, Life Extension has included niacin in its chromium supplements. In response to evidence that many people need higher does of chromium, a new formula has been developed that provides 500 mcg of chromium along with 60 mg of flush-free niacin in just one capsule. To provide full-spectrum benefits, the antioxidants and gene-protecting nutrients that have been specifically shown to protect against very high chromium intake are included. These nutrients include curcumin, resveratrol, and green tea extract. To protect against niacin-induced methylation defects, small amounts of folic acid and vitamin B12 are also included.
