A powerful free radical fighting antioxidant and cancer-fighting substance is probably sitting in your spice cabinet. Curcumin, a naturally occurring yellow pigment found in the spice turmeric (biological name is Curcuma longa), which is part of the ginger plant family, has been identified as an important substance because of its wide-ranging health benefits. Today, studies are confirming the curcumin’s promising treatment possibilities in cancer patients.

Animal and human studies are unveiling curcumin’s anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Researchers have found that this powerful extract slows the proliferation of cancer calls by inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death). One such study by scientists at New York’s Columbia University found that curcumin, besides inducing apoptosis, inhibited prostate cancer cell proliferation in vitro by interfering with the cells’ protein signaling pathways that usually starts the growth process. (Mol Urol 2000 Spring;4(1):1-6)

Another study at Wayne State University saw the same apoptosis action on gastrointestinal and colon cancers. An earlier Chinese study demonstrated the death effect when curcumin was introduced in colon cancer, and certain skin, kidney and liver cancer calls in cultures of mouse embryo fibroblasts. (Nutr Cancer 1996;26(1):111-20)

Curcumin has been shown to inhibit the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the development of certain cancers and chronic inflammatory diseases. A transcription factor in cancer cells, nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-KB) is also kept at bay with the plant extract. In cancer patients, it is crucial to suppress NF-KB because of its ability to help cancer cells grow and evade control. Curcumin has also been identified as an inhibitor in abnormal platelet aggregation, which could lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Unfortunately, further human and animal studies also revealed that users of curcumin supplements were not getting optimal benefits from the extract. Why? Curcumin, to be effectively assimilated into the bloodstream must be combined with small amounts of piperine (a component
of black pepper). It seems piperine enhances the body’s natural absorption function.

Because of its cancer fighting and overall health potential, further studies are exploring additional health benefits of curcumin. As a proactive health-conscious organization, Life Extension has developed a curcumin supplement that can be a safe addition to your anti-aging, anti-cancer regimen.
