A multitude of research has underscored the major role essential fatty acids (EFA) play as a defense against disease and age-related disorders. GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) have been shown to protect against chronic inflammation, a condition that can lead to heart disease, stroke elevated cholesterol levels, and other age-related disorders.
In youth, the fatty acids GLA, DHA, and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are produced through metabolic processes involving the enzyme called delta-6 desaturase. Unfortunately, this enzyme diminishes with age, leading to a deficiency of fatty acids that are needed to regulate inflammation and the immune response system.

Fatty acids are essential for life. Besides storing energy, these fats are part of our makeup; they live in our healthy cells, muscles, nerves, and organs. Conversely, there are bad fats that must be controlled or avoided to maintain good health.

The “good” fats are unsaturated fats that are usually from oils of vegetables, nuts, and some fish. Since they cannot be produced within the body, our diets must be EFA-rich. “Bad” fats are saturated fats, typically from animal fats, dairy products, avocados, etc. Without adequate levels of good fats, dangerous saturated fats will replace the essential fatty acids in our cells, reducing membrane fluidity and efficiency and starting the process of premature aging and disease development. Deficiencies in essential fatty acids have been linked to heart disease, hypertension, elevated LDL cholesterol, insulin resistance, dementia, and memory loss, among other common disorders.

Supplementation with the right proportions of fatty acids can maximize the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins (E1 and E3), while suppressing pro-inflammatory prostaglandin E2. In addition to avoiding saturated fats and high glycemic foods that contribute to chronic inflammation, eating omega-3 foods, and consuming supplements that provide GLA, DHA and EPA can help control inflammation by bringing balance to the essential fatty acids.
