Vitamin E is an antioxidant derived from plants. It is actually a family of nutrients that includes tocopherol and tocotrienols, each with their own subfamilies of alpha, beta, gamma and delta substances. Unless your brand contains the full spectrum of these nutrients, you are not getting the full benefits of vitamin E.

A super antioxidant
The fact is most commercial vitamin E supplements do not contain the gamma form of the vitamin, depriving you of the full range of its antioxidant effects. The vitamin E you buy at the local pharmacy is mostly alpha tocopherol. The full complement of tocopherol and tocotrienols, which include alpha, beta, delta and gamma for both, is what’s needed for full protection.

Study after study is putting tocotrienols ahead of tocopherol based on this vitamin E fraction’s positive effect on human and animal physiological and biological functions. It must be noted here that alpha tocopherol is known to be an important antioxidant. But, when combined with other parts of the vitamin, the benefits are significantly enhanced. An animal model of aging study makes the point. It demonstrated the ability of tocotrienols to extend life span, in this case 19%, while reducing protein carbonylation, a toxic oxidation process that comes with aging. (A Biol Sci Med Sci 2000 Jun; 55(6):B280-5)

Tocotrienols also lower the level of LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) and apolipoprotein B, both indicators of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. It even fights cancer. This wonder nutrient is so effective because of its structure of double bonds in the isoprenoid side chain, making it a great catcher and harsh disciplinarian of free radicals.

Besides the focus on the merits of tocotrienols and tocopherol, it is important to supplement with the gamma, and not just the alpha, form of the vitamin. Again, commercial products are mostly alpha, an unbalanced vitamin E formula. Scientists have found that too much alpha tocopherol displaces the critically important “gamma” fraction of vitamin E in the body. Just imagine how much a complete vitamin E formula can do in its fight against harmful free radicals that eventually lead to deadly diseases.

Cardiovascular disease and tocotrienols
Even cardiovascular disease can be prevented or, at least, controlled with the right kind of vitamin E supplementation. Research indicates that tocotrienols can clear atherosclerotic blockage in the carotid artery, a condition that can lead to stroke. (Lipids 1995 Dec; 30(12);1179-83)

Cholesterol levels too, have been lowered by this super fraction of vitamin E. The particular study involved 25 high cholesterol patients in a
double blind study. The treatment group was given four capsules daily of 50 mg tocotrienols mixed with palm oil, while the control group was given corn oil. After eight weeks, total cholesterol and LDL levels decreased significantly in the 15 subjects given the palm tocotrienols, while the control group exhibited no change. (Am J Clin Nutr 1991 Apr;53(4 suppl):1021S-1026S)

Fighting cancer
Cancer, one of mankind’s deadliest diseases, has no known cure. However, scientists have been working feverishly to find its nemesis, or at least something that will treat it, allowing those afflicted to live near normal lives. Tocotrienols have shown tremendous promise in this regard.
Tests have shown tocotrienols ability to kill cancer cells by inducing programmed cell death (known as apoptosis). The good thing is, while doing this, it leaves healthy cells alone.

Human breast cancer cells have also responded positively to tocotrienols treatment as noted in a study of cancer cells in culture whose growth was inhibited with the vitamin E fraction. (Lipids 1995 Dec Dec;30(12):1139-43) Other in vitro study cases have effectively demonstrated the ability of tocotrienols to hold back the growth of estrogen receptor-positive and estrogen receptor-negative cell reproduction. (Lipids 1998 May;33(5):461-9) Interestingly, in these studies, it was the gamma- and delta-forms of tocotrienols that did the trick, not alpha tocopherol — it actually proved ineffective.

Prostate cancer, hypertension and other diseases have also been positively linked to the combination of vitamin E, especially the tocotrienols. The point is balance is key to vitamin E supplementation. We cannot ignore the studies underscoring the benefits of the full spectrum of the vitamin in preventing and treating age-related diseases.

Since its inception, gamma tocopherol has been enhanced with potent doses of palm oil-derived tocotrienols, the highest quality available.
