Powerful antioxidant carotenoid which is the source of the red coloring of tomatoes

Lycopene may protect against certain types of cancer better than any nutrient presently known. It has also been identified as an effective prostate cancer fighter. The potent lipid antioxidant properties of lycopene make it particularly effective in blocking LDL-cholestrol oxidation. Athero-sclerosis is partially caused by the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, and

Lycopene binds with LDL cholesterol to block free radical activity on the arterial wall. Life Extension was the first to introduce lycopene way back in 1985. Since then, improved tomato extraction methods have given consumers access to supplements that contain greater concentrations of lycopene at lower prices.

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant carotenoid which is the source of the red coloring of tomatoes, red peppers, red grapefruit and watermelon. For years it was ignored by nutritionists because it cannot be converted into the essential vitamin A. In recent years however, it has been shown to have major protective effects throughout the body from prostate to brain, and is one of the nutrients suspected of being behind the Italian low heart disease (while consuming high levels of fat) paradox. Research has found that lycopene is better absorbed when preheated in, or taken with fat.

Yet more evidence has surfaced that lycopene fights prostate cancer, and more generally preserves the integrity of the cell. This is the first report to show that lycopene reduces prostate specific antigen (PSA), a measure of prostate cancer activity. In this study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society (August, 2001), 32 mostly African American patients who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and were awaiting radical prostatectomy were put on diets that included enough tomato sauce to provide 30 mg/day of lycopene for three weeks. Prostate cancer is more frequent and serious among African Americans than among Caucasians.

Mean serum PSA concentrations fell by 17.5%, while a measure of oxidative status fell by 21.3%. DNA damage in the cancer cells fell by 40% after three weeks. Most important, high concentration of lycopene in prostate tissues resulted in a nearly three-fold increase in programmed cell damage among cancer cells.
