St. Johns Wort (hypericin extract) has been widely studied for its anti-depressant properties and is prescribed in Europe in lieu of expensive drugs. St. Johns Wort is a weak inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A, which may destroy dopamine in the brain leading to depression and sexual dysfunction. Flavonoids, hypericin and pseudo-hypericin are the constituents thought to be associated with the benefits of St. Johns Wort. In particular, hypericin appears to be the active ingredient. The use of this herb dates back to the Middle Ages when it was used as a remedy to help heal the battle wounds of soldiers. is thought to be an effective anti-depressant. Studies indicate its benefits in the treatment of anxiety and numerous emtional disorders. It is also used as an expectorant. Additional research is being conducted in order to determine the herbs possible benefit in treatment of the AIDS virus. In a report published in the British Medical Journal (Dec 11, 1999), St. Johns Wort was shown to be equally effective to a tricyclic anti-depressant drug (imipramine) in treating depression. This study compared the effects of St. Johns Wort, imipramine or placebo on 283 moderately depressed people. After eight weeks, the doctors found that St. Johns Wort alleviated depression symptoms significantly more than the placebo and just as well as the anti-depressant drug. Not all studies where St. Johns Wort is used to treat depression have been consistent. Caution: - Use caution when
