Supports skin and nerve health and premenstrual function needs.* Black Current Oil is rich source of the essential fatty acid GLA. It is also an excellent source of Stearidonic Acid.

A paper in the British Journal of Rheumatology (1994) reports the findings of a 24-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in RA patients treated with black currant seed oil rich in GLA and alpha-linolenic acid. Patients receiving black currant seed oil showed reductions in the signs and symptoms of the disease. The placebo group showed no change in disease status. According to the researchers, the study showed that black currant seed oil is a potentially effective treatment for active RA. No adverse reactions were observed, although some people dropped out of the trial because of the size and number of capsules they were required to take (Leventhal et al. 1994).

lA later study reported in the British Journal of Rheumatology used oil taken from black currant seeds, which contain both GLA and alpha-linolenic acid. Rheumatoid arthritis patients in this double-blind, placebo-controlled study who received the black currant oil experienced relief, but those receiving the placebo did not. There were no side effects noted (Leventhal 1994).

Caution
Those taking anticoagulant drugs like Coumadin® (warfarin) should inform their doctor that they are taking GLA, EPA, or DHA supplements, as the physician may want to adjust the dose of anticoagulant medication based on tests that measure coagulation factors such as template bleeding time.

Since GLA, EPA, and DHA interfere with blood clotting, those who suffer from any type of hemorrhagic disease related to excessive bleeding or blood vessel leakage should consult their physician before supplementing these fatty acids.
