What Is Blood
Pressure? In a the most basic
sense, blood pressure is a way of measuring how much force is being exerted
on the walls of your blood vessels (artery) as blood flows through them.
Systolic is the pressure exerted as your heart contracts or beats. This
is measured as your heart sends a surge of blood through the vessels.
A reading of less than 120 mm Hg is considered normal. Diastolic is the
pressure exerted when your heart relaxes in between heartbeats in the
arteries. A reading of less than 80 mm Hg is considered normal. For adults,
HIGH blood pressure or hypertension is defined as a blood pressure greater
than or equal to 140 mm Hg / 90 mm Hg.
Importance
of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring Doctors, diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, the American Heart Association and other healthcare professionals recommend home blood pressure monitoring for various reasons, including the ability to provide them with better information to understand and manage your high blood pressure.
Additionally, many factors can affect your blood pressure, including physical exertion, emotional fluctuations, diet, medications and stress, so having your blood pressure monitored at a Pharmacy with an in-store device after you have been shopping or walking around might not provide you with an accurate measurement.
Monitoring your blood pressure at home allows you to more easily measure in a relaxed state and gives you the flexibility to take your measurements at various times during the day. By keeping track of your home blood pressure readings, you can provide your healthcare professional with a log of your blood pressure measurements over time, which can help them evaluate the effectiveness or need for medication.
A.P.S. The main source of
error with the wrist monitors is that the monitor has to be at the level
of the heart when a reading is taken. Omrons Patent A.P.S. (Advanced
Positioning Sensor) technology solves this potential error or problem.
The Omron Wrist Monitor with A.P.S. will not take a blood pressure reading
until the monitor is at heart height. The product guides the user with
arrows, instructing the user to either lower or elevate the monitor until
its in the proper position. The monitors LCD will indicate
to the user that the monitor is at the proper height and then the blood
pressure monitor begins to inflate and take a reading.
Do You Know Your Cuff Size? An essential part of getting an accurate blood pressure reading is using the correct size arm cuff. Make certain that the cuff fits snugly around your arm. The cuff should make good contact with your skin and you should be able to fit one finger between the cuff and your arm.
Omron blood pressure cuffs are clearly marked for ease of use the edge of the cuff should be located approximately ½ above the elbow and the green marker on the cuff is located above the brachial artery on the inside of the arm.
The majority of Omrons blood pressure monitors come with a standard size cuff that fits arms 9-13 in circumference. With these models, both small cuffs, fitting size 7-9 arms, and large cuffs, size 14-17, are available. With certain models, such as the HEM-780, HEM-773 and HEM-712CLC, the cuffs that come with the products will fit larger size arms.
What is IntelliSense®? The IntelliSense® Monitor inflates the cuff to the ideal level with each use. No adjustments are required by the user to select an inflation level. This is especially convenient for hypertensive users and for people with certain arrhythmia or heart disorders, because their blood pressure is likely to fluctuate. The advantage is Personalized Inflation for maximum comfort.
