Beta sitosterol is a substances found in plants, which is absorbed in human tissues after ingestion. Plant sterols have been found to have immune modulating activity and antitumor activity in animal models and human clinical trials (Bouic et al. 1999).
Beta sitosterol has been known to be effective in reducing cholesterol levels. It has a close chemical resemblance to cholesterol which causes the absorption of cholesterol to be blocked through competitive inhibition. Beta-sitosterol has also been shown to lower serum cholesterol levels while improving lipoprotein (HDL, LDL) profiles. Though to have anti-inflammatory
properties, Beta Sitosterol can improve the growth of damaged blood vessels
in the brain. A study examined the effect of Beta Sitosterol upon damaged
blood vessels of gerbils. The results showed that it enhanced the formation
of new vessels in the brains damaged by ischemia/reperfusion in a dose-dependent
fashion. Beta Sitosterol also enhanced the expressions of proteins related
to angiogenesis (development of blood vessels). Administered at 500 mug/kg/day
for a period of 19 days, it significantly improved the motion recovery
of the animals. The results suggest that Beta-Sitosterol can enhance the
condition of damaged blood vessels in the brain and may thus improve brain
function.
